The July 2026 change to the 97153 Wyoming Medicaid rate
Wyoming published an update on CPT 97153 Rate Changes, a billing and reimbursement clarification dated August 7, 2026, for a change effective July 1, 2026. The change is recorded at 20.0%. The current 97153 rate is $12.30 per 15-minute unit, with no modifier, or $49.20 an hour.
Because the clarification was published after the effective date, agencies that billed 97153 in July 2026 should check that those claims were paid at the new rate. The clarification covers both billing and reimbursement, so it is worth reading in full rather than only noting the new figure.
How the 97153 Wyoming rate compares nationally
At $49.20, Wyoming sits in the lower part of the national ranking. It pays more than New York at $38.52 and Louisiana at $40.00, but far less than Alaska at $127.80, Georgia at $123.64, Iowa at $114.36 and the District of Columbia at $110.00.
Technician assessment support (97152) pays the same $12.30 per unit, or $49.20 an hour, 23rd of 29 states and 36.1% below the national median of $77.04.
Federal data for May 2025 puts Wyoming's median wage for the closest comparable technician occupation at $21.77 an hour, close to the national $22.08. That wage is 62.9% of the 97153 rate, leaving a margin of $18.26 an hour after a loaded wage, the same as on 97152. Supervision, travel, cancellations and administration all have to come out of that margin.

BCBA wages and margins in Wyoming
Wyoming's analyst proxy wage is $30.28 an hour, against $28.53 nationally. Both wage figures use proxy occupations and are floors rather than market pay for credentialed BCBAs and RBTs.
- 97151, 97155 and 97156: the wage is 43.7% of the $98.40 rate, leaving $55.36 an hour after a loaded wage.
- 97153 and 97152: the wage is 62.9% of the $49.20 rate, leaving $18.26 an hour.
The analyst hour carries a far wider margin than the technician hour in Wyoming. That favors service models where BCBAs deliver a meaningful share of treatment and caregiver training directly, rather than models that rely on technician volume.
Prior authorization and Wyoming Medicaid payment
The Wyoming schedule attaches one prior authorization rule each to 97151, 97152 and 97153, and two to T1027. Codes 97154, 97155, 97156 and 97158 carry none, and no ABA code has a published unit limit. In practice, the authorization work sits on the assessment and technician codes, while analyst treatment, caregiver training and group sessions can be scheduled without a schedule-level authorization rule.
ABA in Wyoming is paid through Wyoming Medicaid on a fee-for-service basis, administered by the Department of Health, so the published schedule is the payment rate. Our data counts 18 plans and program arrangements in the state. See Wyoming managed care for how they are organized.
Wyoming against the highest and lowest ABA states
Wyoming is a below-median state for technician hours and a near-median state for analyst hours. Against the top of the market, Vermont pays $197.40 for 97155 and Virginia leads on analyst-led groups at $112.52. Against the bottom, Louisiana pays $27.00 for 97155 and $21.00 for caregiver training, so Wyoming's flat $98.40 analyst rate sits comfortably above the low end even though its technician hour does not.
